As I previously posted, I painted three paintings in order to give a client the opportunity to choose the piece that best fitted her dream room. This one was the second one still using the same color  palette, but in a much bolder style.  The size of the canvas is a bit bigger than the standard 36" x 48" that I have always used. I had the 40" x 48" canvases custom made in order to have a bit more heigth  in what I thought might help for rooms with high ceilings. I found that I really like the extra few inches to paint on as well.

My first large canvas was a 24" x 48"...looking back I remember how big and lost I felt. The more you paint on large canvases the more natural it becomes. It's like having a bigger playground to play on! Now, I find the large canvases to be SO much easier to work on than the small ones.  For now, I've got eight 40" x 40" that I'm going through with a series of paintings.  I will soon be re-ordering some more of these custom ordered 40" x 48" from Rupen, at canvas place.com.  Not getting paid to mention this business, I just have always loved working on these canvases. They are of good quality and the price is good. Shipping can be costly on the large, large and have found that a 50% sale at Michael's in my home town is a wonderful thing. (but need to have a large back end vehicle or a pick up truck in order to get them home)

"Made for You" Original Abstract Painting and a few changes....

Made For You
Acrylic on 40" x 48" x 1.5"

Commission Sold

I haven't posted in several weeks, but it isn't because I haven't been painting. This is one of three large 40" x 48" paintings that I have been working on for a local commission.  I was able to visit this home to get a feel for and given color swatches for ideas. It turned out to be a beautiful piece that fit perfectly into the room. I loved working on this and such a joy that it meant so much to the owner.  I have also been thinking a lot about wanting and actually needing to make some changes with my work.  Not a bad thing. It's actually inspiring to be thinking about these things. I've been feeling this for awhile but just not knowing exactly what I want to do. The ideas have been coming and I've have written many of them down in order to go back to them.  Two of the bigger goals (changes) are with my approach to painting and secondly with presentation.

I began in 2008 painting floral paintings with transparent watercolors that were very realistic.  Amazing to go back and look at these. They were the beginning of the process and this journey. At the time, I was only playing around with the abstracts.  In time the abstracts were more me and won out...and there I've been ever since.  I've learned SO MUCH about painting and selling as an independent artist. Presently, I've been feeling as if I need to artistically challenge myself more and move on for new growth. To do this I feel I need to concentrate more time with each painting(s), playing, exploring and bringing to completion a series.  So, this is what I'm going to be doing beginning this spring and through the summer.  I'll continue to work on other projects as they come along.

The second change is with my website, this blog and my approaches to selling. Presently, I have a large body of work available for sale on my website, Etsy store and with Zatista.  I will be working on a separate website from the one that I presently have with a blog. I will announce those changes on here so as to redirect.

For now, my time spent on the internet when not painting will be to set up these new changes.  I will continue to show glimpses here, there and on instagram.

Abstract Painting "Mondegreen" Original Modern Art by Elizabeth Chapman

Mondegreen
Acrylic on 40" x 48" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

Note the size of this canvas. Not your standard 36" x 48". I had these custom ordered as I was feeling like I needed a bit more heigth when working on the standard 36"H.  Also, I believe this helps as well in homes that have those high ceilings. Working with one of my favorite colors again as seen in "Dream Life". The horizontal band has been heavily layered with acrylic paints which is a contrast to the much lighter lower band of neutral whites. They were actually harder to create than it appears as those lighter tones are mixed from color.  Layers of washes were applied over drips and controlled drips. It's not really showing well, but the pops of red have a bit more orange to them.
