Daffodils as they were popping up a few weeks ago indicating the first signs of Spring, where the inspiration for this painting.  My intention was to begin the painting just as I would any of my abstracts and then find where the flowers where to fit in. Then it was simply a matter of layering enriching the color and contrast.

It is that time of year! yay!  Flowers are beginning to bloom and  who can not help but be inspired by the new growth and colors.  I knew when I saw the orchids that sit in our window beginning to bloom that a painting would come from them. This is it.  No, it doesn't really look like this, but it was what I used for the initial sketch on canvas. From there, the rest was made up. Imagine that.

LARGE Contemporary Abstract Painting "Ultramod" by Elizabeth Chapman

Ultramod
Acrylic on 40" x 60" wrap canvas

SOLD

Painted back in 2013 and just sold! No, they don't sell fresh off the easel, at least not for me. The important thing is to just continue to paint.  Be encouraged that they do in their own time find their home.  Also, it seems, that sometimes the most popular paintings are the slowest to go...go figure.  This one became an extremely popular painting which I did not know at the time that would occur.  I just paint and work on finding a painting's composition, color palette and flow along the way.  It's own voice, so to speak.  Unique.

It brings me much joy to paint and even more to know a work  is going to be well loved!

FRESH OFF THE EASEL!!

That's right this one is just coming down from the easel. Phew! It was one of those that I began but then came back to a few weeks later to resolve.  This is not always something that I like to do it, as I find that it is much easier to make daring decisions when I stick to one painting at a time. But, that can be stressful too. Wait a minute, don't they say painting is suppose to be relaxing? True, it can be. For the most part though, there are so many ideas, decisions, frustrations, etc., to work through that it can leave a person drained.

There were a lot of frustrations as I worked to find my place with this one. Once there, it was just plain fun!  I pretty much have an awareness of the whole piece as I am working myself through various parts. Totally, thinking color, lines and shapes. Not really thinking about if it looks like anything. The important part to me is in finding each paintings own unique groove.

When I finally reached that point in which I had a feeling of completion, I stood back to look at the painting from a distance.  It was so much visual fun imagining a beach scene with piers sticking out of the water.  The bottom half being the sandy beach and you can even see a little snack shack to the left. Plenty more to see if you just imagine for yourself! That's what I love about abstracts!

Contemporary Palette Knife Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

Salvo
Acrylic on 30" x 30" x 1.5" canvas

ORIGINAL

SOLD

This one was done with a palette knife painting. Colors are dipped out from a jar of paint, applied and mixed on the canvas. It has been a while since I did one of these and really enjoyed getting back into it.  I don't believe the image of the painting does it justice as there are so many tiny pieces of color that the camera reads much of it into one color. Much merging of color occurs.

This painting was inspired by a recent trip that we took to Florida around the middle of February.  The first thing my eyes caught site as I looked out from the airport was all of the palm trees, blue skies and sand. Green, green, green,...everywhere!

We were welcomed back to Missouri with 20 degree weather, gloomy skies and brown trees.  This painting was a way to visually journal those pure Floridian experiences. Can you see any of it?!

It's been nearly a month since I painted this one, but with the snow and cold weather was not able to get outside to photograph it. LOL.So, here it it....enjoy!!
