BLUE Abstract Expressionistic Painting "West Wind" by Elizabeth Chapman

'West Wind'

Acrylic on 36" x 36" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

This is an abstract painting that I recently painted for a couple in Laguna, California.  It was painted to have a similar feel to another painting Zephyr, which I painted last winter and sold.  I went back and studied the painting to figure out how and what colors I had used in the mix. A Phathlo Blue is the main color used here.  In keeping things similar, I also listened to the same music...Chopin.

Blue Abstract Painting "Altruist" Original Art by Elizabeth Chapman

'Altruist'

SOLD

Acrylic on 17"W x 26"H heavy watercolor paper
Ready to frame

This painting is a continuation of finding my way back to painting with joy.  I hate to call it having fun, as that can be equated with not being a professional.   When you paint everyday and many times with the expectations of others the joy of painting can be zapped right out of you. I've had a few breaks were I realized when I was painting that I was having fun...I mean ALOT of fun.
This is one!

Painting ever so freely here.  Sometimes it can be hard in deciding how much is enough.  Time.  Can value always be measured by time? A questioned that is often asked of artist is "how much time did it take you to paint that?"  The answer is always "all my life!"

Red Abstract Painting "Ascend" Original Art by Contemporary Artist Elizabeth Chapman

Ascend
Acrylic on 24"W x 30"H x 1.5" wrap canvas

SOLD

For the longest time red was a favorite color of mine.  At one time the majority of my paintings were in the red warm color palette.  Recently, as I was viewing my portfolio it dawned on me that the majority of my paintings are now mostly in the blue range.  How did that happened?  Well, I believe it began last winter and I just simply kept painting in a cooler palette.  Seems like blue is the new favorite.  As I was picking out a new background color for my blog, guess what color stood out. Yep, blue. I'm working on fitting more of the reds back in.  That was the inspiration for this painting!

I don't always have this to show, but the painting below is a shot taken just before it was completed.  Honestly felt as if it was nearly done, but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Taking this image helped me to see that.  I left it to lay as I worked on other paintings.  One day, I walked in the studio with a willingness to take a risk and that was just what it needed!

Above image is the completed painting.

Abstract Painting "Dream" ORIGINAL Contemporary Art by Elizabeth Chapman

Dream

Acrylic on 24" x 24" x 1.5" wrap canvas

I so enjoyed working with the softer colors, neutrals and subtle texture variations.  Reminds me of the seasons changing here in the Ozarks.  The beautiful green colors of spring/summer have stayed with us this year due to a rainy summer.  Fall being in the air with hints of the richness of color that will come.  Then there is the bareness and restfulness of winter colors with it's neutral grays and whites.   Which is your favorite? or perhaps you enjoy all of them!  There are aspects of each season that I look forward  to and love.  It's wonderful to have the changes!
