Authenticity.... I have been in love with this painting!  I don't know of any other way to describe it other than to say there is a certain authenticity a pureness that draws me.  I have got one more floral on the easel with the ideas for it in my head and the beginning washes and sketches in place.  Just been elsewhere lately...  cleaning out the pantry, the kitchen, researching new cooking recipes, grocery shopping...making plans to paint the kitchen.  Does that sound like procrastinating?....maybe so

Bright and sunny.....  we ordered seed last night for this years garden, only 23 days to go till spring!  I'm posting the latest from my floral collection here.  My inspiration is coming from the anticipation of warmer weather, new growth and the fresh new colors that spring brings.  This one was painted last week during an ice storm that we were having in the midwest! Thankfully, our area was not affected by any power outages.  The storm of 2007 left us with no electricity and single digit temperatures for 11 days.  We now prepare as best we can for the worse, but always hoping for the best!

wondering....  were you wondering what Tounesol stands for?  Well, if you speak French you would know, but if not... sunflowers.  Not only have I been on a track with painting abstract florals lately, but also with French words for titles.  I have two more completed florals to photograph and another idea for one on the easel.  Then it will be on to my next obsession .... which I imagine will probably be the 24" x 24" (8) canvases I ordered yesterday!

Springbound....actually right now it's more like snowbound or icebound as we were hit earlier today with a winter storm.  I am spending the day painting flowers with my thoughts focused on that beautiful spring weather that will soon be here. No this is not today's painting as it will be a few days before I get outside to photograph.

Each spring when our Peonies bloom I have made a bouquet and painted them.  "Floret" is a Spring 2012 painting, acrylic and mostly palette knife.

Winter blahs.... are being chased away today by gathering new marketing information and setting new goals.  I am NOT a cold weather person and today is cold, which calls for chicken pot pie tonight!  A wonderful site in which I just got through listening to   "Top Tips For an Awesome Blog", click HERE may have a topic to encourage you as well.  It is that time of year when I begin to feel and hear the signs of spring that a desire to paint floral abstracts begins.  I'm thinking that it's not just me, as I seem to notice more florals among other artist's as well with this seasonal change.  I was up early this morning finishing up a floral that was begun this week....and yes, of course colorful!  ....now for a pic,  a title and then to post it.

The last time I placed an order for large canvas I had Rupen include as many 24" x 24" canvases that would fit in with the 48" x 48" for the same shipping cost. That worked out to four canvases and have used those with the last three abstracts.  My first time working with this size....and love that size.
Canvasplace.com is where I order my canvases and have not had a problem with warping, plus they also lightweight for shipping.

Twist and Turns....taking on what seems to be a new direction with more of a sense of abstraction or possibly just breaking more rules. Either way enjoying the journey and...having fun painting!

I am not a title person...I can paint, but when it comes to words...it can take me days and I do mean days.  So, often I get asked the question, "What were you thinking?" from my hubby.

What is an artist to do with all that we have going on around us, but to continue on. Would you not agree that it seems as if we are in a mess in this world we are living in? Lamentations would probably have been my title....yet through it all there is hope and joy, for that we can be very thankful.

For his anger endureth but a moment: in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.  Psalm 30:5

Morning Joy!

Abstract Heart Painting, "More Love"...love one another Original Contemporary Heart Art by Elizabeth Chapman

Just SOLD...Thank you!

Love one another.....

I have contemplated selling the original painting as an image of it was used for a book by Jean Vanier titled "The Heart of L'Arche"- A spirituality for everyday, released Jan.17th. 2013 view HERE.  I am truly thankful for those who enjoy and see the marks of an artist in a work of mine enough to make a purchase in order to own and hang the painting in their home or in this case using the image for the cover of a book.  But for me, the true joy is in the process of creating!!

There is a story behind this painting as to what a small world we live in.  I was working with Sarah Smith, spckpublishing.co.uk, the cover designer for this book through several emails from the initial contact through the completion of the image transaction when she realized my connection to the blog " A Beautiful Mess". I am very proud of this blog/business in that these are my daughters as well as now having grown into a family business and they've been a huge inspiration to me from the beginning.  Sarah couldn't believe it as their blog is her front page on her computer, so that she has been keeping track of the 2-3 blog entries a day that they post.  She was working with their mom!

So, anyway...back to the painting... should I hang on to it or not?....well, I'll just let someone else decide that for me!!

Commissioned Palette Knife Painting, "Summer Splay" by Elizabeth Chapman

'Summer Splay'
Acrylic on 48" x 48" x 1.5" wrap canvas
Commissioned Painting

Mixing and Merging...... of color  begins on the canvas itself.  I love painting these that I refer to  as my palette knife paintings.  There is no pre-mixing of color and planning as it all occurs on the canvas itself.  It's beautiful watching the colors that are created as they mix and merge into each other.  Now with that said, I must say that there was a plan to this one as it was a commissioned painting in which the request was that it look like a previous painting of mine 'Indian Summer',( post from 2009 on what to do when discouraged)  only much larger.  So, I did lay out a basic sketch of the composition and color scheme on the canvas beforehand.  However, that very first painting was created in the summer time with a hint of fall in the air without any preconceived ideas, working intuitively with one color leading to the next.

With each new painting there is something to be learned.  To be honest re-creating from a previous painting of mine takes some of the excitement, anticipation and inspiration away as I pretty much know what the outcome will be.  For my inspiration, (besides the fact of being paid) my thoughts were centered around this family and the enjoyment they were going to receive, how it would speak to each member of the family, what it would mean to them, etc.,,  There were many problems with obtaining a good image of this painting because of the reds in it.  Red is always difficult to photograph. This time it seemed much worse as we tried many, many, many different times of the day.   The reds where all blurred into one and not showing the various value tones. Having a good representation was so very important as they needed to see it as close to possible to the real painting in order to approve the work. This time I just decided to google problems with photographing red....and found to my delight, my answer.  Various camera models will photograph reds differently. Duh.  I have been using a new camera that I purchased in order to have higher resolutions pic.  Switching off to my old camera solved the mystery.  Guess what I will be using to photograph paintings with a lot of red in them from now on?!

This image of "Summer Splay" was seen and approved (LOVED) by the new owners of the new painting.  However, they have not seen it in real, yet! as it is presently on it's way.

Awaiting in anticipation their response of the real work!!
