Peonies in our back yard have bloomed and I always love painting these each spring.  It is usually around Mother's Day that they are in full bloom, but this year they have blossomed early here in Missouri.  This a single flower on a small canvas painted with a palette knife capturing more of a gestural rendering than a realistic portrayal.  Painting could be hung as it is or further enhanced by framing it.  Next up I will post the vase and bouquet of these Peonies.  Hope you are enjoying the spring collection of floral paintings....thanks for reading!  Enjoy!

I am posting these floral abstracts in the order in which I have been painting them.  Once again, I have found myself using a palette knife to paint with, which creates a texture that I love with the florals. If you are looking for a piece of affordable original fine artwork, you have found the place. 'Eloquence' would look outstanding in a gold frame on a wall in you home or office!

I have been obsessively painting floral abstracts for days now..."Cali" is the first from this new group.  My interest has been more of captivating a feeling and so I begin with a quick gesturally drawing.  Then comes the COLOR!!  I also noticed that when I paint the floral abstracts I like to use a palette knife.

This painting went through several distinct stages before this emerged...and I love it!! so, I stopped! Lots of surface texture as I was playing with the modeling paste again.

What's next?  Well, I have found myself being inspired by flowers lately and have been revisiting photos of flowers from years past.  The peonies are blooming!.... just got to capture a painting of those.  It has been a most wonderful Spring here in Missouri this year.  If you've ever visited my web gallery you would have noticed that I have several categories of abstract paintings.  My main focus is the large abstract paintings, but I also work with floral abstracts and there is also a heart series.   It is refreshing for me to work with these various categories.

Lately, I have been feeling inspired by flowers...

so, I will follow.....

stay tuned!

I've been playing again with modeling paste.....this time as I first began this painting I used it not only to texturize the surface but to knock out the composition.  From there I just followed the lead....and finished with a touch of Periwrinkle.

A bit of a different feel as I am working with a lighter, softer color palette, mixing my neutrals and colors together on the canvas as I worked with brushes and a palette knife. The canvas was textured with modeling paste before beginning to paint.  Dry wall tape was used at one point to create a texture as well as scratching through some layers of paint. A pony tail holder that had been laying around in my studio came in handy as well to print the oblongs and was also used for the straight lines.  Enjoy!...   Elizabeth

'Treat'
Acrylic on 24" x 48" x 1.5" canvas
 Commissioned painting
SOLD

Treat....a celebration, festive, fun...

This painting was commissioned to be painted much in the style of "Spree" with mostly a lime green and purple color scheme, but with the same fun feeling.  Not only do I welcome working with the ideas of a client, but it also is a wonderful new challenge.  I have sat for hours and admired this one, but not for long....as it is getting picked up tomorrow.

Thank you, once again....Shawna!!

Setting my mind on a commissioned painting that I'm getting ready to do.  The painting that I was given as a reference, is one that I did last year titled "Spree".  (presently using it on the front of my web gallery) The colors will be different, but still have a "fun" feeling to it.   I do spend much time thinking and tossing around a client's ideas before beginning a commissioned painting.  What does that have to do with this painting?  Well, in the process of doing that I believe that some of these thoughts came out with this small one.  What do you think?

Another one of the small abstracts recently completed.  "Syncopa" was done entirely with a palette knife...well, except for detailing the spheres.  Getting ready to teach a beginners watercolor class at a local community college this week. So, right now I am trying to shift gears a bit... back into the realistic realm with the watercolors but find myself getting easily bored.  This is probably a good thing to change it up a bit.  Keep you posted!
